Banding of haemorrhoids

Preparation:
Preparation: No specific measures, although if performed as an out patient it is important to ensure that you have adequate time to allow for recovery after the procedure.

Procedure:

A proctoscope will be inserted through the anus and the haemorrhoid located. Using a special banding tool a small rubber band is placed around the haemorrhoid. . More than one haemorrhoid may be banded.

Anaesthetic:
Usually none although may be performed with other procedures

Post Op:
Although not particularly painful some patients do feel a little light-headed after the procedure and it is advisable to wait in the clinic for a short period after the procedure. The band cuts off the blood supply to the haemorrhoid with the result it will fall off. The band and the haemorrhoid will fall off in about 1-2 weeks and this may result in some bleeding.

It is important to avoid constipation after the procedure and some patients do benefit from taking a laxative for 1-2 weeks
