Femoral

Pre-Operative preparation:
Standard general anaesthetic preparation for elective procedures. In an emergency there may be the requirement for fluid replacement prior to surgery.

Operation:
Femoral herniae are traditionally repaired through an open procedure i.e a cut in the groin or a higher incision. Commonly a nylon mesh is used to cover the defect through which the hernia protrudes. A laparoscopic approach is also possible to insert a mesh.
In cases where the hernia has strangulated an open approach is required and it may involve the resection of a short segment of bowel if this has been trapped in the hernia- this is a surgical emergency.

Anaesthesia:
Local, Regional or General.

Post operative care:
Day case or with an overnight stay, unless the hernia is obstructed. For an elective case it would be expected that you would be mobile after recovery from anaesthesia. It is likely that you will be a little tender with certain movements for 1-2 weeks but that you would be fully recovered after 3 weeks.

OPC Codes:
T2200 primary repair femoral hernia
T2280 repair strangulated femoral hernia
T2300 repair of recurrent femoral hernia
